To attach to a period country cottage in the Windsor area, Architect Lisa Pemberton designed a modern extension that houses the kitchen. A bold contrast to the rest of the home, this wide-open structure boasts a bare brick wall, floor to ceiling crittall doors and large skylights. Keeping the cabinetry predominately floor-based accentuates the expanse of space overhead, affording an unrestricted dwelling that draws the eye skywards. The use of materials in this home creates a fresh yet homely environment, earthy tones and roughness from exposed bricks, solid timbers and reflective expanses of glass all contribute to a space that feels incredibly warm and comforting. The scale in which they are used conveys a modern finish. The colour pallet for the Topiary property is soft and welcoming with smokey greens, off black and white, with antique brass finishes adorning the furniture and white marble reflecting the light.
We also had the pleasure of designing the working rooms of the house. With similar colour pallets, these spaces continue the overall feeling throughout the home. The Bootroom includes full-height oak pigeonhole storage for all shoes and wellingtons, an oak bench with personalised drawers for each member of the family, hooks, panelling and plenty of cupboards for all of those items we like not to see every day! A mixture of oak and painted furniture keeps this space feeling harmonious with the old part of the house and hard-wearing for its everyday undertaking of being a working home.
